What is the select water process?
Generally, decaffeinating coffee falls into two types of processes, solvent-based and non-solvent based.
Solvent-based processes can use solvents, the most common are methylene chloride or ethyl acetate, directly (highest potential of human exposure to chemical residue) and indirectly (low potential of human exposure to chemical residues). Typically if a coffee does not name a process one of these two processes are used.
The Select Water Process is a non-solvent based process. The green coffee is pre-soaked in water to expand the beans for caffeine extraction. The beans are then introduced to a solution concentrated with coffee solubles (natural protein) that extract the caffeine without extracting the coffees particular flavor. No headaches, no chemicals.
